Before committing a full team and budget to a game, it is worth answering one question first: is the core loop actually fun? Two common ways to answer that are a vertical slice and a full prototype, and they are not the same thing.
What a Prototype Proves
A prototype is the fastest, roughest version of the core mechanic you can build. It usually has placeholder art, no progression system, and exists purely to answer one question: does this mechanic feel good to interact with, repeatedly, for a few minutes? Prototypes are cheap and disposable by design — if the loop is not fun, you throw it away and try a different one without much sunk cost.
What a Vertical Slice Proves
A vertical slice goes further. It takes one small section of the game — one level, one biome, one chapter — and builds it close to final quality: real art direction, real audio, a taste of progression, and the UI flow a player would actually experience. A vertical slice answers a different question: does the full experience, at production quality, hold together and feel like the game you are pitching?
Why the Distinction Matters for Budgeting
Treating a prototype as if it were a vertical slice is a common and expensive mistake. Teams sometimes polish a prototype’s mechanic without ever testing how it feels with real art, real pacing and a real session length, then discover those problems only after full production has started. Building the right one at the right stage keeps a production budget aimed at a game that is already proven to work.
A Practical Sequence
- Step 1 — Prototype the core loop. Validate that the central mechanic is fun in isolation, with throwaway art.
- Step 2 — Build a vertical slice. Take the validated loop and build one polished section end-to-end, including UI and a progression taste.
- Step 3 — Use the slice to plan production. The vertical slice becomes the reference for art direction, content pipeline, and the production schedule for the rest of the game.
This sequence costs more upfront than jumping straight to production, but it is consistently cheaper than discovering a fundamental design problem after months of full production work.
